Driving Solid Waste Management Solutions in Georgia
Municipalities in Samegrelo–Zemo Svaneti continue to face complex challenges in improving their solid waste management systems. Existing gaps impact service quality at local level and slow progress toward truly integrated waste management.
To address these issues in a practical and coordinated way, a Regional Working Group Meeting was held in Zugdidi under the Integrated Solid Waste Management Program II (Program). The program is implemented by Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia (SWMCG). The session, led by PMCG, focused on three core technical assistance packages: expanding paper and cardboard collection in Zugdidi and Poti, introducing PET bottle collection in Zugdidi, modernizing waste collection systems, and piloting organic waste processing in the Zugdidi Botanical Garden. PMCG played an active role in presenting analytical findings developed by the team of international and national experts, translating working papers into actionable steps for municipalities, and facilitating discussion on how these initiatives can be adapted to local needs.
As part of the wider cooperation between Georgia and Germany, supported by KfW Development Bank, these measures form a solution-driven response to long-standing regional challenges. Through the joint efforts of Fichtner GmbH & Co. KG (lead), Paseco, and PMCG, the Program is turning strategic documents into real solutions on the ground—strengthening local capacities, promoting separate collection, and laying the foundations for cleaner, more sustainable cities and communities across Samegrelo–Zemo Svaneti.
