Engaging Youth to Advance Sustainable Waste Practices in Georgia
Improving waste management practices in Georgia remains an ongoing challenge, particularly in regions where separate collection systems and modern disposal infrastructure are still emerging. Yet even when technical solutions exist, progress is often hindered by limited public awareness and insufficient community engagement. Without strong local involvement and continuous awareness-raising efforts, the transition toward sustainable waste practices slows significantly, reducing environmental impact and limiting the potential for circular economy initiatives.
As part of the Integrated Solid Waste Management Program II (Program), the program which is implemented by Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia (SWMCG), significant steps have been taken in Samegrelo–Zemo Svaneti to address these needs. To strengthen public awareness, an educational event for students took place in Zugdidi, featuring presentations on separate waste collection, project videos, interactive discussions, and a field visit to the paper separation facility.

The event was conducted based on the best international practice and concepts developed by a team of international and national experts throughout the Program. By providing technical insights, guiding stakeholder engagement, and helping translate project objectives into practical, community-centered activities, the AMC* team supports Georgia’s continuous progressing toward cleaner, more efficient and sustainable waste management systems.
Accompanying Measures Consultant (AMC) has been supporting Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia (SWMCG) within the framework of the Integrated Solid Waste Management Program II launched by KfW and the Government of Georgia in 2019. The team includes experts of Fichtner GmbH & Co. KG (lead), Paseco, and PMCG.
