Strengthening the Capacity of CSOs in Uzbekistan

11.04.2024

On 3-4 April, PMCG, as part of a consortium led by ICE EEIG, organized two significant events in Tashkent (Uzbekistan), namely the EU Grant Scheme Kick-Off Event and the EU Grant Management Training. Both occasions marked a pivotal time in the implementation of the EU-funded “Human Rights and Democracy Support Measures for Uzbekistan” project. Notably, it aims to strengthen the capacity of civil society organizations (CSOs) in Uzbekistan to act as partners in the pursuit of inclusive sustainable development, and to promote human rights, democracy, fundamental freedoms, and gender equality.

During the kick-off event on 3 April, the EU Delegation to Uzbekistan announced the launch of grant projects selected following a call for proposals aimed at empowering civil society in Uzbekistan. The initiation of these projects enshrines the effort being made by EU-based international CSOs, local civil society partners in Uzbekistan, and state partners. Moreover, the granting of EUR 3.5 million in EU funding to eight initiatives underlines a commitment to empowering civil society, especially women and marginalized groups, in the country.

High-level officials, including H.E. Charlotte Adriaen, Ambassador of the European Union to Uzbekistan and Mr. Bobur Bekmurodov, Chairman of the Movement “Yuksalish,” delivered opening remarks at the kick-off event. Thereafter, introductory presentations of all the grant-funded projects were given. Meanwhile, among the event’s attendees were representatives of the international community, the Government of Uzbekistan, the media, and the grant beneficiaries.

Subsequently, on 4 April, the EU Grant Management Training was conducted for grant beneficiaries. The training covered various topics, including guidance on managing grant contracts, procurement, reporting, and compliance with EU visibility requirements. Crucially, it aimed to enhance the capacity of CSOs to implement visibility and communication activities effectively for EU-funded projects and to strengthen project management skills to be applied in practice.

Ultimately, both the kick-off event and the training emphasized the EU’s continuing support for CSOs in Uzbekistan. At the same time, participants, including grantees and stakeholders, engaged keenly in interactive sessions to disseminate key project details to a wider audience, and facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration.
