Discussing Enhancement of Parliamentary Oversight in Security Sector
On February 11-12, an international conference entitled “Parliament and the Security Sector: New Challenges, Stronger Oversight” was held as part of the EU’s technical assistance project “Support to the Parliamentary Oversight of the Security Sector in Georgia.”
The Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia, Carl Hartzell, and the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, Mr. Irakli Kobakhidze, opened the conference.
Its main objective was to discuss how best to maximize parliamentary oversight of Georgia’s security sector and to increase transparency by ensuring proper monitoring of defense and security agencies, and improving relevant legislation. The participants examined a wide range of subjects, including hybrid warfare, cyber security, radicalization, migration, women and security, government secrecy, and the challenges of monitoring intelligence agencies.
“During the conference we discussed new threats to Georgia’s security and examined the ways of enhancing parliamentary oversight on the security sector,” said Levan Dolidze, Deputy Team Leader of the project and a consultant at PMCG.
This EU-funded project is being implemented by PMCG, as part of a consortium led by B&S Europe.
